Shhh. Is That a New Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke® You Hear?

Diesel engines in heavy-duty pickup trucks are known for a lot of qualities, such as extremely good torque. They generally are not associated with quietness. The all-new new Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine debuting in the 2011 Super Duty lineup may change that. It’s expected to be the quietest, smoothest diesel in the segment, outperforming its closest competitors by several decibels.

How much quieter is it? Watch and listen to the video below to compare the sound of the new Power Stroke engine to its predecessor.

“Historically, consumer perception has been that diesels should sound rough and tough, but from a sound quality perspective they were actually loud and unrefined,” said Scott DeRaad, engine NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) engineer.  “At Ford, we approached the new diesel development as though it was more than a work truck and something that people wanted to drive, making ‘quieter’ a reason to buy.”

Most of the improvement in NVH comes from changes made to the combustion system and the structural integrity of the compacted graphite iron block, as well as from mounting one turbocharger on the engine block instead of two. Specific design upgrades were made to both the piston and the piston bowl to optimize the combustion process, which features a two-stage combustion event instead of a single-injection event, causing harsh, sudden and loud combustion.  Instead, a starter or pilot injection of fuel begins the compression process before the main injection.

The new diesel is also designed to deliver other significant improvements, including better torque and horsepower, class-leading fuel economy and best-in-class towing and payload for unparalleled performance.

The new 6.7 diesel in the new Super Duty looks awesome. However it is far more truck than I need, I just wish a smaller version was available for the F-150. If such a truck were to come out I would get one as soon as I could. In the area where I live, which is south central Nebraska, a lot of farmers such as my self drive F-150's but wish it had a diesel. This is something Ford needs to do! Reply

I have a 99 7.3 diesel with 345,000 miles. I have stayed away from the 6.0 do to the many problems and the 6.3 do to poor fuel milage. I hope the 6.7 is as good as the 7.3 otherwise I don't know what I am going to get on my next purchase and at this time am holding off getting anything. Reply

What about all of those hillbillies that buy an F650 just to stomp on the accelerator to get a nice plume of black smoke out of the tailpipe?

Lets face it, Ford is selling diesels that are intentionally noisy, inefficient, and polluting. Reply

Am I the only person patiently waiting for Ford to put a diesel in the Expedition.
If the time was ever right it is now. Your market share would skyrocket with this vehicle. Reply

Al, I have been asking the same question for 10 years now. You and I can be the first in line when Ford does this. Reply
