With nearly 60 years of racing history, Glen Wood says it’s hard for him to believe that he’s been nominated for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Glen is one of 25 legendary people from racing history nominated for the first NASCAR Hall of Fame class. This first class of inductees will have only five members.

Glen Wood started racing cars nearly 60 years ago with his brother Leonard as part of the aptly named Wood Brothers Racing Team. He drove a variety of cars for 10 years, and then became crew chief and eventually team owner for some of the greatest drivers in history. All told, Wood Brothers scored over 100 victories. Among their achievements as a racing team, they will be remembered as the pioneers of the modern-day pit stop.

“This is icing on the cake, you might say. It all started back in 1950 with a Ford car, a ‘38 model,” said Glen Wood. “And, of course, it went on from that, several years of just Sportsman Modified racing, until I got a call from Ford Motor Company in ‘56 to join the convertible division that had just been formed. That was sort of our start with Ford, which has been behind us from then to now. It’s just been a big ride for us to have accomplished what we have.”

Wood Brothers has had some of the biggest stars in the sport drive for their team, including David Pearson, Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough and currently, Bill Elliott.
