Journalists Squeeze 2011 Ford Super Duty® For Impressive Fuel Economy

Fuel efficiency and heavy duty trucks haven’t traditionally been talked about in the same sentence. That’s changed now, thanks to the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty®.

Ford recently invited journalists to test-drive the new Super Duty in Arizona. During the program, Ford challenged these reporters to a contest to see who could achieve the best fuel economy while driving a the Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 on an 80-mile stretch of surface roads and highways. The winning media team on the first round achieved 29.2 mpg and the second an astonishing 34 mpg!

Three-person media teams drove from Buckeye to Glendale, Arizona, in an F-250 or F-350 with 1,000 pounds of payload. Depending on vehicle configuration, media teams were expected to meet targets of 26.5 mpg (pickups with 17-inch wheels and a 3.31:1 axle ratio) or 24 mpg (pickups with 20-inch wheels and a 3.55:1 axle ratio) while driving the 80 miles in a time frame consistent with what Ford engineers achieved.

Drivers were given fuel economy tips from the Ford vehicle energy engineering team and a few ground rules: stay on the specified route, follow the provided turn-by-turn directions and drive at the posted speeds (no speeding and no crawling).

Winning the first wave was the team of Bob Plunkett, Chuck Bowen and Sue Mead. Plunkett, a syndicated auto journalist, drove; Bowen, managing editor of Lawn & Landscape, and Mead, a writer for newcartestdrive.com, navigated. The team achieved 29.2 mpg.

“I was in awe of what that vehicle was able to do,” said Plunkett, who has participated in fuel economy challenges before. “It’s a huge machine and to pull those figures is very impressive.”

Bowen echoed those thoughts. “I was very impressed,” he said. “My car does not get much better mileage than that.”

Fuel economy on the all-new 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty equipped with the Ford-engineered and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbocharged diesel engine averages an 18-percent improvement for pickup models and up to 25-percent improvement for chassis cabs versus 2010 models.

Renowned hypermiler Wayne Gerdes, owner of cleanmpg.com, won the second round at 34 mpg. He had the Ford optimizations as well as his own techniques in hand as he looked to better the mark during the second wave of media drives. He drove a Super Duty with 17-inch wheels.

“Honestly, when I heard they got 29 the first day, I thought I’d be lucky to get 25 mpg,” said Gerdes, who was an important adviser to the Ford team that achieved 1,445 miles on a single tank of gas in a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid last April. “I was hoping to get 25 to 27 mpg.”

Gerdes used several different techniques, including keeping the revs around 1,000, slowly accelerating and using the drafts of other cars and trucks. The result: an astounding 34 mpg for the route, beating the target by 8 mpg.

Gerdes followed that up by driving the F-250 from the Phoenix area to his home north of Chicago. He covered 1,907 miles on 68.094 gallons of fuel for an average of 28 mpg. Gerdes said weather conditions – rain, fog and strong winds – caused him to drive about 6 to 8 mph slower than he anticipated. Still, Gerdes completed his journey on less than three tanks of fuel and blended his own B20 biodiesel to use the whole way, another testament to the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel’s performance story.

“I’ve never driven anything like this – this was fun and a great challenge,” said Gerdes. “I’ve driven SUVs half this size and not achieved this level of fuel economy. This is just incredible and world-class.”

Leading the second group using the 20-inch wheels was the team of Tony Swan, Car and Driver, Joe Szczesny, Oakland Press, and Mark Vaughn, AutoWeek. They achieved a stout 26.5 mpg.

“It was a good test of the engine and of the overall efficiency,” said Szczesny, who did the driving. “We heard that someone had achieved 26 mpg, so we were definitely shooting for better than that.”

To verify the fuel economy numbers in the media challenge, the 2011 Super Duty diesels were tracked with CrewChief™, a component of available Ford Work Solutions™, a technology package that can help owners manage their business from the work site.

CrewChief is a fleet telematics and diagnostics system that allows fleet owners to efficiently manage their vehicles, quickly dispatch workers to job sites and keep detailed vehicle maintenance records.

Gerdes also took advantage of another Ford Work Solutions component, namely the in-dash computer. Developed with Magneti Marelli and powered by Microsoft Auto, the in-dash computer provides full high-speed Internet access via Sprint Mobile Broadband Network and navigation by Garmin. It’s the first broad-band capable in-dash computer in production and is operated when the vehicle is stationary.

During breaks, Gerdes tweeted (www.twitter.com/cleanmpg) from the truck’s in-dash computer and posted text and photo updates of “Wayne’s Excellent 2011 Ford Super Duty Adventure” to his Web site.

I have 500 miles on my new 2010 F250 SD 6.7 Diesel. I average between 11 and 13 mpg. I love the truck, not the MPG. Any ideas? Thanks BTW, I drive this thing very carefully. I also have a Toyota Prius 2007 my wife drives. She gets 50 MPG. She can't haul things like my Ford however. Reply

If you own a 2010 PSD you do NOT have a 6.7L you have the 6.4L built by Navistar. Get your facts straight before you tell us these things. ALSO the 6.7L is all new for 2011 not 2010 Reply

there is NOTHING impressive about running 1000rpm (45mph) on the interstate...

as proof that even "hypermiler wayne" knows its dangerous, to run these speeds on the
interstate, he drives w/ his 4way flashers on !!!

DRAFTING...thats what they call it on a RACE TRACK...DRAFTING on the INTERSTATE Hi-way
is called TAILGATING & its DANGEROUS !

promotion of this type of driving is DANGEROUS, IRRESPONSIBLE & UNREALISTIC !

you want high mileage, buy a VW TDI or POS prius....you wouldnt tow or haul anything w/
those, anymore than you would with a truck configured w/ 3.31 gear ratio !!

your setting up new owners / customers for SERIOUS disappointment by making folks
think theyll be able to reasonably achieve these MPG's day in and day out ! Reply

you dont have a clue what you are talking about. i have a 2007 peterbilt 379exhood that has 3.36 gears in the rear and it pulls like no tomorrow. this gearing just shows what true torque can do. i bet you drive a prius so you have no idea what torque is. Reply

wow you dont have to tail a person to get the effects of a draft, and he wasnt driving at 1,000rpms he was keeping the revs under that as in accelerating slowly. Reply

Norman H. they ARE doing 50mph, in fact they're doing LESS than 50mph...1000rpm = 45mph
there are videos of hypermiler wayne running down the interstate, 4way flashers on, and hes showing the dash....it shows the tach at 1000rpm & the speedo reads 45mph...ON THE INTERSTATE !!

Hypermiling is not the REAL / AVERAGE MPG that a normal driver would obtain ! Reply

haha, 100rpm does not necassarily equall 45 mph, i have a 2007 f250 with a 6 liter diesel, and when im cruising down the highway with my 5 speed automatic transmission at 65 mph and my rpms are only 1300-1400. so with a new 6 speed transmission with a dual overdrive gear, tell me how this would be impossible? im listenining.. I drive a 3/4 ton diesel and have several friends with all manufacture of diesels. There is no way you can drive a 7000 lb truck at normal speeds in normal conditions and factory setup. (Not some special tune that will not meet gov standards) and get 26.5 mpg. The current f250 in 4x4 is lucky to get 18mph on the freeway, if you increase that by 25% that gets you to 22.5mph. I could believe some people get 22.5 now if they drive slowly in a 2 wheel drive single cab truck. I hope someday they (I don't care which company) make a 3/4 ton truck that gets in the mid 20's. Hi Don R.:

During the challenge, I averaged over 37.5 mph with the off road switchbacks, rush hour traffic and a multitude of stops for signs and lights before arriving back at the hotel. Easily a higher average speed than most would drive under those same conditions.

Why Ford added the drafting part is up to them but it was “Traffic Side” draft. This is when you are in the right lane between the PSL (legal) and cars pass you on the left. Your draft is the low pressure area every car that has ever passed anyone leaves behind and you an d everyone else has benefitted from tens of thousands of times if not more. Learn about what you are condemning before rushing to judgment so as to not appear to be out of control…

My vid of the Gilbert, AZ to Flagstaff climb occurred while I had a camera in my hand to catch the 7,000 foot sign. I almost pulled over in fact but caught it just in time. Do your best to catch that 7,000 foot sign without slowing down and with a camera in your hand. I played it safe by following the speed limits and using my E-Flashers. What would you have done???

Apparently you know little about Hypermiling I encourage you to join CleanMPG to both learn and add your thoughts at any time.

You can read more about the cross country drive with the Excellent 2011 Ford Super Duty at the following:

Save fuel to the best of your ability as the gallons you consume today are not available for you tomorrow…

Good Luck to you and yours.

The Tonka brand can't wait to get there hands on the new Super Duty for a Corporate build to showcase the "toughness" of this truck. We love the aggressive style, MPG, and purpose. This is a DREAM for someone who needs to tow on a regular basis. It's about function to the engineers at Ford and that shows with this product! Reply

GM canceled their smaller displacement truck diesel. They had already tooled for it and the government told them to stop development. I think it was 4.5 liters and was supposed to get 30mpg+. Reply

BS. It wasn't canceled by the government; GM management put the project on 'indefinite hold' before they went through Ch. 11 because of the economy- they couldn't keep paying for the R&D. Reply

Yep Ford's has it figured out. I agree with commnets throughout this thread, unrealistic driving style to get the amazing mpg, but that was the purpose, it's nice to know that there is this potential in STOCK off the lot truck, a lot of it is the new higher rear end gearing and the new 6R140 trans that has 3.90 1st and double OD... but unitl this 6.7 SSCORPION has been proven, no one can tell me to trade in 01 CC 4wd drw... love to have an 08+ F450, but still do not believe that its that much better a truck to be saddled with $800/mo... still FORD FORD or FORD is my vote. I have an 01 7.3 crewcab 4x4. By slowly accelerating and staying at the posted limit I averaged 21.4 mpg round trip from charleston to boston. Some state roads but mostly interstate. Biggest drop of MPG is accelerating from a stop. 34 mpg from a HD diesel truck is VERY impressive. Reply

Other people testing the new 2011 super duty have not come close to achieving this kind of mileage. If real world is the real indicator, then a new diesel that is choked off with all the smog crap will only do 2 or 3 mpg over current 2010 superduty I don't understand the hype. Quit kissing the EPA's tailpipe and get me a diesel pickup that gets 30 mpg with out having to drive like I have an egg under the accelerator. And there is no way that I'd drive under the limit on the hi-way. At least not where I live if I want to keep living and not get rear-ended! Reply

I drove one of the trucks I ordered months ago today, 6.7 with 3.50 gears and about 40 miles on it. Average driving with 3-4 stop lights and average speed of 50 mph on a few hills & curves with an empty truck and occasionally hitting the petal to feel the torque of new engine I averaged 15MPG. That’s better than my 08 6.4's that average 10-12 but I also do not have the additional additive NEEDED in my 6.4 Diesels that this new Ford 6.7 REQUIRES. Add that to your figures and you really are getting the same $h!T as far as cost per mile. The only difference is nicer truck with better seats in the Lariat at least, and of course the title of nicest truck in town until a few more get one. Overall anyone who expects 20+ MPG from this truck AVG driving shouldn’t buy one because you wont get it. Occasionally on the highway empty you may but AVG, wont happen. AND DONT FORGET THE ADDITIVE THAT GOES INTO A SEPARATE COMPARTMENT NEXT TO THE FUEL FILL! No one seems to talk about the cost of this. ITS AN ADDED EXPENSE! Dont forget about it when you are doing your calculations. Reply

Test drove a 2011 desiel crewcab today with 3.31 rears. Took on 30 mile drive all interstate. Got 22 miles to the gallon driving 75 mph. The urea tank is 5 gallons and last between oil changes. Less than 2:50 $ gallon to refeal. I will probably buy this truck tomorrow. The average miles per galllon computer is not as simple to reset as you might think. Its not a logical step, you have to push the arrow to the right and then push reset. Hope that's what happened to the last post. Reply

I am a die hard Ford fan and owner, but you are using the MPG reading from the dash your an idiot. It is not accurate and don't trust it. I do it the old fashion way of math. My dash computer on my F-250 is usually higher by 1-1.5 mpg. We want to see the real math figure (how many miles you drove and how many gallons you put in). Reply

lots of great comments
the 6-speed transmission and gear ratios are cirtical to the overall performance and gas mileage. i was concerned about the 3.31 rear axle but the math works with the additional power and gears.
Ford chosse to treat the exhaust rather than reduce the engine output so the engine is free to create power and the Diesel Exhaust Fluid chemicaaly reacts with the engine exhaust to create a clean tailpipe emission.
Ford has built quality into the whole product line and i like what i have seen from this truck so far Reply
