The hits just keep on coming. On Monday, November 23, four more “One More Reason” advertisements will be on the air. Once again, you get a preview of the spots.

These videos are of people sharing their thoughts and opinions about new Ford cars, crossovers and SUVs. The comments are as real as the people who made them. They are not scripted. In fact, these people didn’t know that they were being filmed for Ford commercials. That’s the only way to get genuine opinions, and that’s how these were produced.

Here’s a short setup for each of the new video spots:

“Rachel Escape Hybrid” talks about how her Escape Hybrid saves her money

“Christopher Fusion Hybrid” tells us why he is pleasantly surprised to be a hybrid owner

“Greg Edge” talks about how the Power lift gate in his Edge has made his life easier

“Adam and Amie Flex” is about coexisting thanks to Dual Climate Control in their Flex

You can also view all of the previously loaded videos in this series.

This is a continuation of last year’s very successful work under the Drive One advertising campaign. Ford will keep highlighting accomplishments in four key areas that shape the reputation of the company – Quality, Green, Safe and Smart. Ford will continue its ongoing commitment to the community, the environment and innovation.

Ford’s world-first application of wheat straw-reinforced plastic

Small changes can make huge difference. Consider a plastic storage bin. By using wheat straw-reinforced plastic rather than 100-percent traditional petroleum products, it is estimated that petroleum use will be reduced by approximately 20,000 and CO2 emissions will be reduced by approximately 30,000 pounds per year.

The first application of the natural fiber-based plastic that contains 20-percent wheat straw bio-filler is on the 2010 Ford Flex’s third-row interior storage bins. Ford is already considering using the environmentally-friendly technology in the construction of center-console bins and trays, interior air registers, door trim panel components and armrest liners.

Ford’s sustainable materials portfolio also includes soy-based polyurethane seat cushions, seatbacks and headliners; post-industrial recycled yarns for seat fabrics; and post-consumer recycled resins for underbody systems, such as the new engine cam cover on the 2010 Ford Escape’s 3.0-liter V-6 engine

“Ford continues to explore and open doors for greener materials that positively impact the environment and work well for customers,” said Patrick Berryman, a Ford engineering manager who develops interior trim. “We seized the opportunity to add wheat straw-reinforced plastic as our next sustainable material on the production line, and the storage bin for the Flex was the ideal first application.”

Collaborative effort

Ford researchers were approached with the wheat straw-based plastics formulation by the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, as part of the Ontario BioCar Initiative – a multi-university effort between Waterloo, the University of Guelph, University of Toronto and University of Windsor. Ford works closely with the Ontario government-funded project, which is seeking to advance the use of more plant-based materials in the auto and agricultural industries.

The University of Waterloo already had been working with plastics supplier A. Schulman of Akron, Ohio, to perfect the lab formula for use in auto parts, ensuring the material is not only odorless, but also meets industry standards for thermal expansion and degradation, rigidity, moisture absorption and fogging. Less than 18 months after the initial presentation was made to Ford’s Biomaterials Group, the wheat straw-reinforced plastic was refined and approved for Flex, which is produced at Ford’s Oakville (Ontario) Assembly Complex.

The wheat straw-reinforced resin is the BioCar Initiative’s first production-ready application. It demonstrates better dimensional integrity than a non-reinforced plastic and weighs up to 10 percent less than a plastic reinforced with talc or glass.

“Without Ford’s driving force and contribution, we would have never been able to move from academia to industry in such lightning speed,” said Leonardo Simon, associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo. “Seeing this go into production on the Ford Flex is a major accomplishment for the University of Waterloo and the BioCar Initiative.”

An interior storage bin may seem like a small start, but it opens the door for more applications, said Dr. Ellen Lee, technical expert, Ford’s Plastics Research.

“We see a great deal of potential for other applications since wheat straw has good mechanical properties, can meet our performance and durability specifications, and can further reduce our carbon footprint – all without compromise to the customer.”

Abundant waste material put to good use

The case for using wheat straw to reinforce plastics in higher-volume, higher-content applications is strong across many industries. In Ontario alone, where Flex is built, more than 28,000 farmers grow wheat, along with corn and soybeans. Typically, wheat straw, the byproduct of growing and processing wheat, is discarded. Ontario, for example, has some 30 million metric tons of available wheat straw waste at any given time.

“Wheat is everywhere and the straw is in excess,” said Lee. “We have found a practical automotive usage for a renewable resource that helps reduce our dependence on petroleum, uses less energy to manufacture, and reduces our carbon footprint. More importantly, it doesn’t jeopardize an essential food source.”

To date, Ford and its suppliers are working with four southern Ontario farmers for the wheat straw needed to mold the Flex’s two interior storage bins.

History in the making

Ford’s interest in wheat dates back to the 1920s, when company founder Henry Ford developed a product called Fordite – a mixture of wheat straw, rubber, sulphur, silica and other ingredients – that was used to make steering wheels for Ford cars and trucks. Much of the straw used to produce Fordite came from Henry Ford’s Dearborn-area farm.

The company’s new-age application for wheat straw joins other bio-based, reclaimed and recycled materials that are in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles today, including:

Soy-based polyurethane foams on the seat cushions and seatbacks, now in production on the Ford Mustang, Expedition, F-150, Focus, Escape, Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner and Lincoln Navigator and Lincoln MKS. More than 1.5 million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles on the road today have soy-foam seats, which equates to a reduction in petroleum oil usage of approximately 1.5 million pounds. This year, Ford has expanded its soy-foam portfolio to include the industry’s first application of a soy-foam headliner on the 2010 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner for a 25 percent weight savings over a traditional glass-mat headliner.

Underbody systems, such as aerodynamic shields, splash shields and radiator air deflector shields, made from post-consumer recycled resins such as detergent bottles, tires and battery casings, diverting between 25 and 30 million pounds of plastic from landfills. The newest addition is the engine cam cover on the 3.0-liter V-6 2010 Ford Escape.

100 percent post-industrial recycled yarns in seat fabrics on vehicles such as the Ford Escape. The 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids feature 85 percent post-industrial yarns and 15 percent solution-dyed yarns. The 100 percent usage represents a 64 percent reduction in energy consumption and a 60 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.

Repurposed nylon carpeting made into nylon resin and molded into cylinder head covers for Ford’s 3.0L Duratec engine. The industry’s first eco-friendly cylinder head cover is currently found in the 2010 Ford Fusion and Escape vehicles.

Launching the next phase

The growth and success at Ford relies on people – its employees, its customers and people who the company hopes to convert to customers. That’s one reason that the Drive One advertising campaign is expanding to include customers sharing their experiences with the newest Ford products.

One of the ways that these experiences will be shared is through a series of TV spots called “One More Reason.” These videos are of people sharing their thoughts and opinions about the new Ford cars, crossovers and SUVs. The comments are as real as the people who made them. They are not scripted. In fact, these people didn’t know that it was Ford filming them, or that they would be used in commercials. That’s the only way to get genuine opinions, and that’s how these were produced.

The spots will begin airing on October 12, but we have an early preview of some of them for you here. Watch them all and let us know what you think.

A test fleet in the UK will put electric Ford Focus cars in real-world use

As many as 20 households in the London Borough of Hillingon will be among the first to experience Ford’s latest zero emissions technology. They’ll get to drive a Ford Focus battery electric vehicle (BEV) for three months, taking part in research testing the technology’s suitability for potential future application in Ford’s passenger-car lineup.

These Ford Focus vehicles have been specially developed for the UK government’s Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicles demonstration next year.

Hillingdon Council will ask residents to apply to participate, accessing a charging infrastructure to be installed in and around the borough from early 2010. Properties will be provided with domestic charging points.

The five vehicles will come from a fleet of Ford Focus BEV prototypes being produced for a consortium that includes Ford, Scottish and Southern Energy and Strathclyde University, as well as the London borough.

This new BEV demonstration fleet is being developed partly with public funding from the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB), which promotes innovative industry-led projects that reduce CO2 while benefiting the country’s transport system.

The Ford Focus BEV

The Ford Focus BEV prototype is based on the current European Ford Focus and will use a new all-electric powertrain from supplier Magna.

The Ford Focus prototypes feature a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack with the capacity of 23kWh and a chassis-mounted 100kW permanent-magnet electric traction motor. It will have a range of up to 75 miles and a top speed of up to 85 mph. Charging the batteries will take between six and eight hours, using a household 230-volt electricity supply.

Ford hybrid sales buck current trends, and a look at some impressive milestones

Leave it to Ford to buck the industry trend. While hybrid sales across the industry are down 14 percent, sales of Ford hybrid cars and SUVs are up 73 percent. Curiously, more than 60 percent of these Ford hybrid customers previously owned an import car. Also curious is the way that taxi companies in New York and San Francisco are using Ford hybrids, racking up 300,000 miles on them before retiring them. Read on for more milestones that Ford hybrids are reaching.

The fuel economy and durability of hybrid versions of Ford Fusion and Escape and also Mercury Milan and Mariner are winning over large numbers of conquest customers, many of whom are previous import owners. Through September, Ford hybrid-vehicle sales are up 73 percent versus the same period in 2008, according to figures from Autodata Inc.

“Hybrid customers increasingly are considering Ford,” said David Finnegan, Ford hybrid marketing manager. ”More than 60 percent of Fusion Hybrid sales have been from non-Ford owners, and more than half of those are customers coming from import brands, mostly from Toyota and Honda.”

Ford’s strong 2009 hybrid sales have been fueled by the introduction of the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids, the most fuel-efficient midsize sedans on the road. Both vehicles deliver an EPA-estimated 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway.

Durable and fuel -fficient

While the introduction of the Fusion Hybrid has spurred sales from non-Ford owners, Ford’s longest-running hybrid nameplate, the Escape Hybrid, has proven particularly popular with Ford customers operating taxi, lifeguard and government fleets, due to the combination of fuel efficiency and durability. The front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated 34 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway, making it the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market.

In 2005, San Francisco became one of the first cities to adopt hybrids into taxi service, with hybrids accounting for 14 percent of its current fleet. Each of the original fleet of 15 Escape Hybrids exceeded 300,000 miles per vehicle before being retired and replaced with more Escape Hybrids. There are almost 200 Escape Hybrid taxis on San Francisco’s streets today.

New York has more hybrid taxis in service than any other city in North America with 13,237, of which more than 2,000 are Escape Hybrids. The Big Apple recently has begun retiring its original fleet of Escape Hybrids put into service in the 2005 model year after accumulating 300,000 to 350,000 miles per vehicle.

“We’re extremely pleased with the performance of the Escape Hybrid in taxi service,” said Gerry Koss, Ford’s fleet marketing manager. “Not only have they proven very reliable, they’ve also saved taxi drivers money on gas and contributed to lower tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions in the cities that use them in taxi fleets.”

“Greening” the federal government fleet

Government fleets also are seeking cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles and hybrids are filling that need. In 2009, federal agencies have purchased more than 3,000 hybrids from Ford, more than any other automotive brand. Included in the sales were 1,900 vehicles acquired through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the purpose of improving the fuel economy of the federal fleet. The U.S. Army was the single largest purchaser among the government fleets, acquiring 400 Fusion Hybrids.

Saving lives and conserving fuel

In 2008, Ford began delivery of a fleet of 45 Escape Hybrids to the Los Angeles County Lifeguards, a division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, for use on rescue patrol along 72 miles of Southern California coastline. After the first 11 months of service, lifeguards reported that Escape Hybrids had played a crucial part in thousands of rescues and more than a million rescue preventions at L.A. County beaches.

The Escape Hybrid fleet enabled L.A. lifeguards to reduce their entire fleet’s fuel usage by 25 percent – more than 5,000 gallons of gas – during the first six months of service. That fuel cost savings has helped L.A. County to maintain its critical front line staffing despite the economic downturn.

1,000-Mile Challenge

The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid was put to the ultimate fuel-efficiency test earlier this year. A team of drivers, including racing star Carl Edwards and world-record breaking hypermiler Wayne Gerdes, drove more than 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the process. We captured the challenge on video, which you can watch here.

The comedian’s latest adventure has him earning city keys from U.S. mayors

How do you follow up acts like visiting and consuming purchases at all 171 Starbucks locations in Manhattan in less than 24 hours, living and sleeping in an IKEA store for an entire week and setting a Guinness World Record by making a video series that features you staying on a commercial airplane for an entire month to get over your fear of flying? If you’re Mark Malkoff, your next ploy is to jump in America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan and embark on a 28-day quest to see how many mayors east of the Mississippi you can convince to give you keys to their cities.

Mark Malkoff is a comedian, writer and filmmaker who has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NPR and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He started his latest adventure in a 2010 Ford

Fusion Hybrid, and he says he hopes to earn 100 keys before his journey on Nov. 1.

“Mark came to us with the idea, and we loved it,” said Jeffrey Eggen, manager, Ford Car Experiential Marketing. “It fits in well with our strategy to raise awareness of our new Ford vehicles by getting real customers behind the wheel and letting them tell their own story.”

“I always tell people I feel like I’m driving KITT from ‘Knight Rider’ because of all the cool technology in the car,” said Mark Malkoff. “It’s the best car I’ve ever driven.”

All of Malkoff’s adventures behind the wheel of the Fusion Hybrid will be chronicled online. Videos, photos and blogs will be featured daily at www.markmalkoff.com,and Malkoff will provide interested followers with regular updates on social networking sites such as Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. You can view all of his content on our Ford on Blogs page by clicking here.

The Fusion Hybrid is America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan, boasting EPA-estimated 41 mpg in the city.

Malkoff and the Ford Fusion Hybrid began their odyssey into the unknown Monday in Harrisburg, Pa., where the mayor had a somewhat peculiar task in store for him to complete in order to earn a key to the city.

“Apparently, all of the police officers ride on horses, so the mayor wanted me to follow them around and clean up after the horses in order to get the key,” chuckled Malkoff, who readily admits he will do just about anything to get a key. “In Fairfax, Virginia, they want me to climb into their town fountain, collect all of the coins and donate them to charity because no one else wants to do it.”

“Once people start finding out about this, mayors from all over the country are going to be Twittering me to come to their cities,” he said. “I like doing things that on paper look almost impossible to pull off.”

Guests will race the electric Focus in the show’s Green Car Challenge

“The Jay Leno Show” will have a new guest starting on Friday, September 18: An all-new battery-electric Ford Focus. The electric car will appear in a segment called “Green Car Challenge.” Tuned to perform on a racetrack that was specifically designed for “The Jay Leno Show,” the battery-electric Ford Focus will be the car used throughout the first season. Celebrities who accept the challenge will be at the wheel, driving quickly to establish a fast lap time that future guests will try to beat. Actress Drew Barrymore is the first celebrity to accept Leno’s “Green Car Challenge.”

The electric Focus to be driven by celebrity guests on “The Jay Leno Show” (NBC, Monday – Friday, 10 – 11 p.m. ET) is one-of-a-kind vehicle, based on the European five-door production Focus ST, modified into a battery electric vehicle (BEV) as part of Ford’s BEV test fleet. This specific car started life as a European production Focus ST, built in Germany in July. The car was delivered to Ford in Dearborn, Mich., where engineers went to work, removing the traditional engine and gas tank and installing an entire electric powertrain – all in six weeks. With Recaro racing seats, a roll cage, a five-point racing harness and wearing a unique (and fitting) Electric Orange paint scheme, the battery electric Focus ST is ready for racing.

Thanks in part to the battery placement, the race-ready Ford Focus BEV has a nearly ideal 50/50 weight distribution for improved race track handling. The front springs and dampers come from the performance-minded Ford Focus RS, a popular, high-performance European production model. The rear dampers and springs are unique to Leno’s Focus BEV.

The car is specifically tuned to perform on the track built alongside “The Jay Leno Show” studio at NBC. To help improve performance, Ford created a similar track at their proving ground in Michigan to test the vehicle so it would be ready to handle the tight turns.

Focus BEV coming 2011*

Besides an ability to perform on the track, the Ford Focus BEV boasts the impressive statistics of a conventional battery electric vehicle, with a range of nearly 80 miles on a charge and peak power of 141 horsepower (105 kilowatts).

The Focus BEV foreshadows many of the same systems that Ford will begin selling to consumers in an all-new electric Ford Focus, scheduled to go on sale in North America in 2011.

There are nearly 700,000 stories waiting to be told

Shortly after Cash for Clunkers came to an end, we were reviewing some of the statistics from the program. While the overall numbers from the U.S. government were impressive, we were extremely pleased that so many people made use of the tools that Ford Motor Company made available to help people understand and make use of this government program. We’d like to hear from some you – please tell us your Cash for Clunker story in the comment section at the end of this article.

And now, some statistics. First, from the Department of Transportation (DOT), here are the results of the entire program. Nearly 700,000 clunkers taken off the roads, replaced by far more fuel efficient vehicles. Rebate applications worth $2.877 billion were submitted by the 8 p.m. deadline on August 24, 2009.

Specific to Ford, it was the most visited brand Web site regarding the Cash for Clunkers program, and Ford was the most visited automaker Web site for people who also visited www.cars.gov, the government’s site for the program.

Shortly after the program began, we launched www.letfordrecycleyourride.com to provide more information to customers. We also launched on online calculator at this site, and offered a live chat to answer questions. Before the program came to an end, more than 2.4 million unique customers visited this Web site, and the qualification calculator was used more than 2.6 million times!

The most impressive figures related to the EPA estimated fuel economy of the cars turned in to Ford dealerships under the Cash for Clunkers program compared to the fuel economy of the new Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles that customers drove away in. The average fuel economy of vehicles traded in was 15.5 mpg, while the average of the new vehicles purchases was 22.7 mpg!

Edmunds.com posted some additional interesting statistics. Click here to go to the press release.

The CARS Act was a temporary U.S. government-sponsored program to assist customers in trading-in a qualifying vehicle for a new, more fuel-efficient and less-polluting one. Customers received a $3,500 or $4,500 voucher from the government on top of all other incentives in exchange for their vehicle. There were 20 vehicles in the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup that qualified for this program. The program ended August 24, 2009. You can check www.fordspecialevent.com for latest specials on Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles.

The first look at the all-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V-8 turbocharged diesel engine

Developing an all-new engine is a big deal. Variants that extend an engine family are one thing. Making updates for better efficiencies or new applications is another thing. But starting from the block up to design and build an entirely new engine, well, that’s big. It’s creating something that may last 20 or 30 years into the future. That’s exactly the challenge that the team under Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of Global Product Development, faced when they started work on the 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V-8 turbocharged diesel engine.

Debuting in the next-generation, 2011 F-Series Super Duty® truck, the new diesel engine will deliver significant improvements in torque, horsepower and fuel economy while adding more fueling flexibility and meeting stringent new emissions requirements.

“This all-new diesel engine has been so extensively tested both in the lab and in the real world that we’re confident we’re giving our customers the most reliable and productive powertrain available today,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of Global Product Development. “Our Super Duty customers demand reliability and durability in their trucks so they can deliver the best results for their business and their customers. That’s exactly what this engine delivers.”

The diesel engine team made improvements and changes throughout the engine architecture to deliver on aggressive horsepower, torque, emissions and fuel economy targets. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke uses an “inboard exhaust” architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel engine. It combines the best of proven technology with new, patented approaches backed by an extensive laboratory and real-world testing regimen to assure customer satisfaction.

Benefits of the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine include:

First use of a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block in a Super Duty-class vehicle in North America; stronger than regular gray cast iron, Ford has successfully used CGI in engine blocks in products around the world. The block structure was optimized for reduced weight and maximum strength to meet the demands of higher torque and horsepower

Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel engine, reduces overall exhaust system volume, which leads to better throttle response for the customer; additionally, reduced exhaust system surface area minimizes heat transfer to the engine compartment and improves NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)

The new engine architecture enables easier service work for all major engine components, potentially reducing down time. On turbocharger service, for example, the body/cab no longer has to be removed from the frame to access the turbo; also, the high-pressure fuel pump, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) components and thermostats are directly accessible from the front of the vehicle

Honeywell’s single-sequential turbocharger features an industry-first double-sided compressor wheel mounted on a single shaft. The unit is uniquely center-mounted on a pedestal low in the back of the valley for improved NVH. This turbocharger design allows the single unit to deliver the benefits of a twin-turbocharger system in a smaller, more efficient package, combining the benefits of a small turbocharger (faster response) and a large turbocharger (ability to compress and force more air into the engine for more power) in one unit

The high-pressure Bosch fuel system injects fuel at up to 30,000 psi. The system delivers up to five injection events per cylinder per cycle using eight-hole piezo injectors to spray fuel into the piston bowl. The direct-injection system is calibrated and phased for optimum power, fuel efficiency and NVH

Aluminum cylinder heads for reduced weight; the mid-deck construction with dual water jackets provides increased strength and optimal cooling; also, six head bolts, instead of four as found on other engines, help improve sealing and maintain cylinder integrity even with the higher firing pressures; overall the engine is about 160 pounds lighter

Compatibility with up to B20 fuel, allowing greener fueling options of up to 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel

“The bar was raised for this new diesel and the Power Stroke team did a fantastic job meeting performance and durability targets,” said Adam Gryglak, lead engineering manager for the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine. “We integrated Ford’s best global practices in engine design, development and testing as we pulled together our co-located team, which included engineering, design, manufacturing and purchasing. This helped us get the job done efficiently and quickly while increasing our focus on the product’s capability, performance, quality and reliability.”

To build team spirit, Gryglak wanted something unique to inspire the organization. The new diesel was code-named “Scorpion,” so a mechanical scorpion designed from engine components graced all internal reports. The name also is a nod to one of Gryglak’s favorite rock bands.

The result of the team’s work is the new Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine, which will deliver significantly improved torque, horsepower and fuel economy while meeting more stringent federal emissions standards that begin in 2010.
